Hello SPR Premium Subscribers,

U.S. equities are showing a strong upward move today, with buying pressure accelerating across the broader market.

Rather than viewing today's rally as simply a reaction to a single headline, we believe the more important development is the rapid shift in market positioning and buying pressure following a partial easing of the concerns that had recently pressured equities.

Concerns over additional Fed tightening and rising Treasury yields had been key sources of selling pressure, particularly across technology and growth stocks. However, comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller indicating that he could support keeping rates at current levels if inflation continues to moderate have helped ease concerns over further tightening.

As a result, Treasury yields have moved lower, risk appetite has improved, and capital has begun flowing back into risk assets.

More importantly, this change in sentiment is now being reflected in actual market positioning and order flow.

Selling and defensive positioning that had increased during the recent decline are beginning to ease, while dip-buying and short covering are emerging across recently pressured technology and growth stocks.

From the SPR perspective, this is the most important development today.

The sharp improvement in buying pressure means that the probability of the additional short-term downside that we had previously been monitoring may now be declining.

However, there is an important limitation to this interpretation.

We do not believe today's rally should yet be interpreted as the beginning of a new sustained uptrend.

The ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict continues to keep crude oil prices at elevated levels, with Brent crude remaining around the mid-$90s and WTI around the low-$90s.

As long as oil prices remain elevated, the risk of renewed inflationary pressure remains significant. This could continue to limit the Federal Reserve's ability to ease monetary policy and could once again place upward pressure on Treasury yields.

In other words, the market is currently facing two opposing forces.

On one side, the rapid improvement in positioning and the decline in rate-hike concerns are creating meaningful short-term buying pressure.

On the other, elevated oil prices and ongoing geopolitical risks remain significant obstacles to a sustained, trend-level advance.

For this reason, SPR currently views today's move more as an extension of the short-term rebound and a defensive move against further downside, rather than a confirmed transition into a new bullish trend.

That distinction is important.

Today's rally suggests that investors are increasingly willing to defend current price levels and that the immediate downside risk may be diminishing. However, the underlying macroeconomic risks have not yet been sufficiently resolved to support a high-conviction, sustained upward trend.

The next key question is therefore whether today's buying pressure can persist through the close.

If the market is able to maintain a significant portion of today's gains through the end of the session, while strong buying pressure remains evident, the probability of further short-term downside would decline further.

Under that scenario, the current upward move could have greater potential to extend over the next several trading sessions.

Conversely, if the market gives back a substantial portion of today's gains or if buying pressure weakens significantly into the close, today's move would be more consistent with a temporary defensive rebound rather than a meaningful change in short-term market structure.

Therefore, SPR is paying close attention not simply to how much the market is rising today, but whether the buying pressure responsible for today's move can remain intact through the closing bell.

We will continue to evaluate today's positioning shift together with tomorrow's U.S. employment data to determine whether this move represents merely a temporary defense against further downside or a change significant enough to alter the short-term market outlook.

At this point, our view is that the probability of additional near-term downside is becoming lower, but the conditions required to confirm a sustained bullish trend have not yet been established.

We will continue monitoring the market closely and incorporate today's developments into our upcoming SPR analysis and Risk Level assessment.

Thank you,
