Subject: SPR Premium Market Update: Breakdown in Buying Momentum and Short-Term Outlook
Dear SPR Premium Subscribers,
Today, the U.S. equity market opened with a significant gap-down, and the sharp deterioration in market conditions caused the balance between buying and selling pressure to break down rapidly.
Until recently, the market had maintained a relatively strong buying base supported by expectations of a more favorable interest-rate environment, falling oil prices, and improving sentiment surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, today’s sharp decline has begun to undermine the reliability of that previously established buying support.
As a result, our short-term outlook has changed significantly across a large number of individual stocks and sectors.
More importantly, the probability of the market maintaining the upper portion of the previously projected August range has declined sharply as of today. The strong upward movement that had pushed the market toward the upper end of the expected range has now been challenged by a sudden reversal in market sentiment.
The primary catalyst behind this change is once again the unresolved conflict between the United States and Iran.
Despite repeated reports that negotiations regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz were progressing, no definitive agreement has yet been reached. As uncertainty surrounding the reopening continues, oil prices have moved higher again, bringing renewed concerns about inflation.
This has created a negative chain reaction:
Continued U.S.-Iran tensions
→ Uncertainty surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz
→ Higher oil prices
→ Renewed inflation concerns
→ Higher-for-longer interest-rate expectations
→ Stronger selling pressure in AI and technology stocks
This is particularly important because the recent rally had been heavily supported by expectations of lower inflation and a more favorable monetary-policy environment. As those expectations begin to weaken, investors are rapidly reassessing the valuation of high-growth technology and AI-related stocks.
Accordingly, the broader weekly outlook has also weakened.
As discussed in our previous weekly outlook, the market had been expected to maintain an upward range through August, with the possibility of temporarily moving toward the upper portion of that range. However, today's sharp deterioration in buying pressure significantly reduces the probability of maintaining that upper-range positioning.
Instead, the weekly trend is now increasingly likely to return to the weaker, range-bound downward fluctuation scenario that we previously outlined.
This does not necessarily mean that the market will immediately enter a sustained collapse. Rather, the current development suggests that the market may return to a weaker and more volatile range-bound correction, with selling pressure gradually becoming more dominant.
The outlook for the important directional turning point around early September has also become less certain. Until now, the market had been showing conditions that could potentially support another upward move into September. However, today's breakdown in buying momentum means that this scenario now carries a substantially higher probability of being revised.
Therefore, investors should pay close attention to the coming sessions. The key factor will be whether today's sharp deterioration in buying pressure is temporary or whether it develops into a sustained shift in the underlying market structure.
In the short term, an oversold technical rebound may still occur following today's sharp decline. However, even if such a rebound develops, we believe a conservative approach and a wait-and-see strategy remain more appropriate than aggressively increasing exposure.
The most important external variable remains the U.S.-Iran conflict and, ultimately, whether a credible agreement regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz can actually be reached.
Until there is tangible progress on this issue and oil prices begin to stabilize, the market may remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments, inflation expectations, and interest-rate concerns.
We will continue to closely monitor the changes in buying and selling pressure and will provide an updated outlook if a meaningful shift in the market structure becomes evident.
Please keep this change in market conditions in mind when establishing your short-term investment strategy.
